It is often said that talent, skill and gifting may exalt you, but character is what will sustain and keep you up. Integrity is vital in your pursuit of purpose. Nehemiah 5:14-15 says, 'Moreover, from the time that I was appointed to be their governor in the land of Judah, from the twentieth year until the thirty-second year of King Artaxerxes, twelve years, neither I nor my brothers ate the governor’s provisions. But the former governors who were before me laid burdens on the people, and took from them bread and wine, besides forty shekels of silver. Yes, even their servants bore rule over the people, but I did not do so, because of the fear of God'.
Manual for fulfilling your purpose: Lessons from the book of Nehemiah (Part 7)
So it was, from that time on, that half of my servants worked at construction, while the other half held the spears, the shields, the bows, and wore armor; and the leaders were behind all the house of Judah. Those who built on the wall, and those who carried burdens, loaded themselves so that with one hand they worked at construction, and with the other held a weapon. (Nehemiah 4:16-17 NKJV)
The work of pursuing our dreams, purposes and calling requires greater commitment and persistence. Nehemiah and his team were so committed to building the walls that when war was imminent they built with one hand and carried the weapon with another. They did not run or quit when it was difficult. They might have worked slowly because they had to carry weapons while building but nevertheless they continued.

6. It takes team work
So we built the wall, and the entire wall was joined together up to half its height, for the people had a mind to work. (Nehemiah 4:6 NKJV)
Notice the word 'we' on the verse above. It indicates team effort. The work was carried by a team. Great visions require a team to accomplish. In fact, if your dream can be accomplished by a singular effort, it might not be significant enough. Big dreams require a team to pull through. All great leaders have one thing in common, they work with a team. One secret that they share is that they surround themselves with a good team.
In Exodus 18, Jethro, Moses' father in law, cautions him about the dangers of working alone and advised him to work in a team. 'So Moses’ father-in-law said to him, “The thing that you do is not good. Both you and these people who are with you will surely wear yourselves out. For this thing is too much for you; you are not able to perform it by yourself. Moreover you shall select from all the people able men, such as fear God, men of truth, hating covetousness; and place such over them to be rulers of thousands, rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens." (Exodus 18:17-18, 21 NKJV)
No matter how talented one might be, it is never good to work alone. Christ said, 'the harvest is plentiful but the workers are few' (Mark 9 v 37). The work indeed is too much and too big for one person. No one should wear themselves out doing work alone. Wisdom dictates that the work be divided among a team. Many leaders have ended up with ill health due to lack of delegating and sharing work. Many marriages have been ruined due to over commitment to work. Many kids have grown up with a present but unavailable father due to unhealthy pursuit of riches. Jethro cautions, 'this thing is too much for you, you are not able to perform it by yourself.'
However, in delegating work to a team, two most important standards come to mind. You are to chose people of ability and integrity. Jethro said to Moses, ' chose able men, such as fear God..'. Do not compromise on these standards. Talent alone is never enough. People having talent without integrity are setting themselves up for a great and shattering fall. While those having integrity without talent will find themselves making minimum progress. You need both talent and integrity in equal measure. These are like two sides of the same coin.
The importance of team work can not be over emphasized. The Lord Jesus Himself worked in a team. He had the twelve disciple that he later appointed as apostles. The Bible says, 'Now it came to pass in those days that He went out to the mountain to pray, and continued all night in prayer to God. And when it was day, He called His disciples to Himself; and from them He chose twelve whom He also named apostles: (Luke 6:12-13 NKJV). This was Jesus's A team. Jesus chose his team prayerfully. If we claim to be followers of Christ, we will do well to follow Him even in this regard. Never be found working alone. Have a team, have a mentor, whatever you do, don't do it alone.
What about Paul, the great apostle and missionary ? Paul had Barnabas, Timothy, John-Mark, Luke, Titus, and Silas. He also had the lesser known Phoebe, Priscilla and Aquila, and the rest mentioned in Romans 16. He never worked alone.
Unity
Unity is the greatest feature within a team. I define unity as working together towards a common purpose. Therefore unity goes beyond coming together, talking together, or even knowing each other. True unity is revealed by sharing the load of the work. Being one in word, vision, direction and purpose. We can't claim unity if we are going in different directions. We cannot claim unity if we are talking different things.
There is great reward in pursuing unity. Psalm 133 says, ' Behold, how good and how pleasant it is For brethren to dwell together in unity! .... For there the LORD commanded the blessing— Life forevermore. (Psalms 133:1, 3 NKJV). People are fasting and praying for The Lord to bless them, not knowing that if they can achieve unity the blessing will come. Unity is a place of commanded blessing. The blessing is hovering around and will land wherever it finds unity.
Divisions
Divisions and factions are the main downfall within a team. Christ said, 'a house divided against itself shall not stand' (Mat 12 v 25). Division is therefore the great enemy within. When people were united, albeit for a wrong purpose, God said nothing shall be impossible to them (Gen 11 v 6). Similarly, when people are divided, nothing shall be possible to them.
Most of the time, divisions manifests themselves in factions. There can be factions of the rich versus the poor, the educated versus the working class. Whatever formations of factions, they should be condemned and discouraged.
We are one body in Christ , and each one is a member with significant value and purpose. The Bible says, 'As it is, there are many parts, but one body. On the contrary, those parts of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable, and the parts that we think are less honorable we treat with special honor. And the parts that are unpresentable are treated with special modesty, while our presentable parts need no special treatment. But God has put the body together, giving greater honor to the parts that lacked it, so that there should be no division in the body, but that its parts should have equal concern for each other. (1 Corinthians 12:20, 22-25 NIV)
The other evil that results in divisions is the formation of personality cults. When people start to separate themselves based on the leaders then we are on dangerous ground. 'For when one says, “I am of Paul,” and another, “I am of Apollos,” are you not carnal? Who then is Paul, and who is Apollos, but ministers through whom you believed, as the Lord gave to each one?' (I Corinthians 3:4-5 NKJV). No matter how powerful and charismatic the leader is, he/she is not greater than the church and certainly not greater than The Lord Christ. The Church of The Lord Jesus existed before, during and will continue long after great leaders. Here is good advise, 'Therefore let no one boast in men. For all things are yours.' (I Corinthians 3:21 NKJV).

5. Expect opposition
In the midst of the excitement of pursuing your vision, you have to be sober minded enough to expect opposition. Nehemiah was not spared of criticism and opposition. The Bible says, 'But it so happened, when Sanballat heard that we were rebuilding the wall, that he was furious and very indignant, and mocked the Jews. And he spoke before his brethren and the army of Samaria, and said, “What are these feeble Jews doing? Will they fortify themselves? Will they offer sacrifices? Will they complete it in a day? Will they revive the stones from the heaps of rubbish— stones that are burned?” '(Nehemiah 4:1-2 NKJV).
The fact that you are acting within God's will for your life does not make you immune to opposition. The fact of life is that not everybody likes you. There will be criticisms, opposition and competition. The road in pursuit of your purpose is not filled with rose petals. Sometimes praise singers will be few and far between, while your doubters will seem to abound.
Joseph the dreamer
In Genesis 37 - 50 we find the story of Joseph, the son of Jacob. In essence the story of Joseph is one of fulfilling a dream amidst great opposition and obstacles. Joseph had to pay a great price and endure hardships in achieving his dreams. Questions we need to ask in this journey are the following; Will you still continue on your vision if people hate you, betray you, wants to kill you ? Will you still continue when people accuse you falsely? Will you still continue when people you have helped have now forgotten you when you need them the most? Joseph remained committed to his cause through thick and thin. Moreover, when the dream was now fulfilled, he shared the fruits of his dream with his detractors. The achievement of the dream did not produce a bitter man but a fulfilled man. This is what he said,' But as for you, you meant evil against me; but God meant it for good. (Genesis 50:20 NKJV)'
Overcoming the fear of people
Therefore if criticism are unavoidable, one needs to be delivered from 'the fear of people'. If you are still saying to yourself, 'what will people say?, then you are not yet free. You must understand that you can not please everybody. Pleasing everybody is an impossible feat. If you manage to please everybody you will be the first one in history. Bill Cosby is generally quoted that pleasing everybody is a sure recipe of failure.
When Joshua took over the leadership reins from Moses, God commanded him to be strong and courageous ( Joshua 1 v 7). Brothers and sisters, we need courage to pursue our dreams. Without courage, fear of people will cripple us and halt our forward mobility. Nelson Mandela once said, ' courage is not the absence of fear, but moving forward in the midst of fear.' Do not let the fear of people hold you hostage. At this point I will echo the Nike motto, Just Do It!
The Bible says, the fear of The Lord is the beginning of wisdom (Psalm 111 v 10 ). I therefore contend that the opposite of that verse is true. The fear of people is the beginning of folly. Please understand that the work of following your dreams, vision or calling is not a popularity contest. It is all about discharging God's call for you in this generation.
How do we handle criticism?
A. Learn to encourage yourself
One scripture comes to mind, ' And David was greatly distressed; for the people spake of stoning him, because the soul of all the people was grieved, every man for his sons and for his daughters: but David encouraged himself in the Lord his God. (1 Samuel 30:6 KJV). ' Sometimes when no one believes in you, you need to learn to encourage yourself in The Lord. You need to be ready with the Word on your mouth. You need to say the Word until it changes your consciousness. God commanded Joshua Saying 'The book of the law shall not depart from your mouth... (Joshua 1 v 8). When praise singers have departed and nay Sayers are everywhere, your best response is to encourage yourself with the promises of the Word. When all you hear is that you won't make it, say ' I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me' (Philipians 4 v13). Be fortified through the Word.
B. Remain humble and teachable
In truth not all criticisms are bad. They can be necessary for our improvement and growth. Learn to take what is good and throw away what is bad. You cannot always surround yourself with 'yes-men'. You also need people who will be courageous enough to warn you when you gravitate towards error. It is not easy to see your own mistakes. Paul says to Timothy, ' Watch your life and doctrine closely. Persevere in them, because if you do, you will save both yourself and your hearers. (1 Timothy 4:16 ).' Sometimes criticism can help you avoid error.
C. Be on the side of the truth
Peter says, ' For it is better, if it is the will of God, to suffer for doing good than for doing evil. (I Peter 3:17 NKJV) . When you are persecuted it should be for good not evil done. If the persecution is for good, if it is for serving Jesus, then the Bible says, "Blessed are you when they revile and persecute you, and say all kinds of evil against you falsely for My sake. (Matthew 5:11 NKJV)". So make sure that when the 'curtain of criticism' comes down that you are on the right side. Criticism and opposition are unavoidable. The only way to avoid them is this, do nothing, say nothing and be nothing.
